Life is hard—disappointment and struggle are constant, while peace is elusive, slipping through our grasp like mist. These human realities do not vanish like morning dew at the sunrise of our new birth. No mystical incantation can banish the lurking shadows that dance upon our minds, tapping relentlessly like the rhythm of an unceasing storm.
Uncertainty casts her cold, ceaseless doubt on our path forward. Our credulity about the promises of God vexes our mustard seed of faith. Left to ourselves, we tremble, fainthearted with worry, sensing our hope slipping away into that shadow world where fear is lord.
Then our Bibles open slowly, like a door on stiff hinges creaking in quiet resistance. Our wearied eyes fall upon the words of our Lord, "Let not your hearts be troubled" (John 14:1). Such tender assurance from a loving Savior, spoken directly to each of us, is comforting. He knows our frailty, our doubts, and our distress. His words are soothing and sure, calming our disquieted souls.
Twice in verse two, he beckons us to believe. "Believe in God; believe also in me," he whispers (14:2). We are bewildered and amazed when we notice our once trembling heart beating faster with expectation, comfort, and confidence. Then, a sudden lightning strike of fear shatters our stillness, but just as quickly, his voice pierces the storm, "You know the way" (14:4). The Holy Spirit reminds us to hold fast to this assurance, "Then you will walk on your way securely, and your foot will not stumble" (Proverbs 3:23). Our endurance does not lie in trusting our own wisdom, cleverness, or good fortune, but in God's promises, "for the Lord will be your confidence" (Proverbs 3:26).
Our nagging doubt slithers out of the gloom of disbelief and hisses, "How can we know the way?" (14:5). The roaring voice of a King thunderclaps doubt and disbelief back into outer darkness from where it came, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life" he declares (14:6).
When the path ahead feels obscured and our hearts waiver, we are reminded of his voice, calling us forward—I am here, I am with you, and I am the path to truth, peace, and life. Follow me.
This is a great sentence, Vito: "These human realities do not vanish like morning dew at the sunrise of our new birth." Couldn't be more accurate. Thanks for sharing.
